the Jammer Bay , Jammerbugten in Danish is open water in the Skagerrak. The bay is part of the Danish North Sea on the northwest coast of Jutland and extends about 100 kilometers from Hirtshals via Løkken to Bulbjerg. The name of the bay is probably derived from “Jammer”: The countless beaches of earlier times meant the miserable death of many seafarers. In the west is the bay from Vigsø Bugt to Hanstholm, in the northeast of the Tannis Bugt is Skagen.
Jammerbucht, source: VisitDenmarkThe Jammerbucht Bay offers fertile fishing spots. The ports of Hirtshals and Hanstholm were only created in the 20th century to replace numerous small landings on the open sandy beach. In Løkken, Lønstrup and Torup Strand you can still see fishing boats lying on the beach, which are pulled into the sea by winches or caterpillars. the Hirtshals Havn was built as the first Danish port on the open North Sea from 1919 to 1930. Today it is one of the largest fishing ports in Denmark. The port of Hanstholm was inaugurated in 1967 after seven years of construction. The most important economic activity in the coastal region, however, is tourism, which is favored by wide sandy beaches, most of which can be accessed by car. The coastline is mainly at Lønstrup despite the coastal protection measures endangered by erosion, while between Blokhus and Bulbjerg even the dune belts even increase due to the calmer currents in the interior of the shallow bay.
